Tiger Water Polo Collects Third Place in Bracket A by Grounding Cardinal, 17-4, in Final Boys’ 18U Contest on Third Day of National State Challenge
LANSDALE, Pa. – Blake Camerlin scored four times to lead Tiger Water Polo (Pa.) to a 17-4 win versus Cardinal (Pa.) in the final Boys’ 18U Bracket A game on the third day of the 2019 American Water Polo (AWP) National State Challenge.
Courtesy the victory, Tiger Water Polo finishes in the bracket’s third position to earn a spot in the tournament’s Fifth Place game versus Team Chicago (Ill.) which placed third in Bracket B. Game time is set for 10:00 a.m. on Sunday, July 14, back at the North Penn High School pool.
Tiger Water Polo dominated the contest by ripping off five markers in the first quarter to acquire a lead it refused to relinquish for the remainder of the game.
Overall, Tiger Water Polo held scoring advantages in each of the four quarters to outperform Cardinal by counts of 5-0, 5-1, 4-2 and 3-1 in the first, second, third and four frames, respectively.
Ben Phillips (three), Nick Eck (three), Sean McClellan (two), Asher Jones (two), David Lomakin (two) and Chris Fisher (one) joined Camerlin in tickling the twine. Jacob Hollo earned the win in cage with one save.
Cardinal will wrap-up its four-day weekend on July 14 as the squad takes on Swim RVA (Va.) – which finished fifth in Bracket B – at 9:00 a.m. for Ninth Place. The game will occur at Wissahickon High School in Ambler, Pa.
Orlando Thunder Blue Caps 4-0 Finish in Bracket A by Topping Buxmont, 22-13, to Earn 2019 National State Challenge Boys’ 18U Title Shot
LANSDALE, Pa. – Alec Johnson scored six times to accompany hat-tricks from Touma Mack, Griffin Ewoldt, Danny Cruz, Zeyad Abdelmaged and Eli Schweiter as Orlando Thunder Blue (Fla.) completed a 4-0 mark in Boys’ 18U Bracket A competition with a 22-13 defeat of Buxmont (Pa.) on the third day of the 2019 American Water Polo (AWP) National State Challenge.
Courtesy the victory, Orlando Thunder Blue earns a match-up against Maverick (Pa.) – which captured the B Bracket with a 4-0 record – at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 14, at North Penn High School for the Boys’ 18U Championship and a prize check for $1,000. Historically, neither team has ever won the National State Challenge at Navy AC (2009, 2010, 2012, 2013) of Maryland, Coronado (2011) of California, Greenwich Aquatics (2014, 2015, 2016) of Connecticut, Vulture (2017) and Chicago Parks District (2018) of Illinois previously took home the Boys’ 18U title.
Buxmont – which finishes 3-1 in Bracket A – will compete in the Third Place game at 11:00 a.m. on the grounds of North Penn against Cumberland Valley (Pa.).
Orlando Thunder Blue wasted little time in claiming a spot in the title tilt as the victor of the game was guaranteed to earn a shot at the crown thanks to both squads entering with then unblemished 3-0 records.
The squads from Florida failed to trail in the game as Orlando Thunder Blue raced out to a 7-4 lead by the conclusion of the first quarter. Trailing by a 10-7 tally by halftime, Buxmont managed to moved within one at 10-9 and 11-10 midway through the third quarter, but Orlando kept their Keystone State foes at bay to expand the gap to three at 14-11 heading into the fourth quarter of action.
From there, Orlando Thunder Blue lowered the boom as the squad outscored Buxmont by an 8-2 count to establish the 22-13 final score.
Ryan Hopegill picked up the victory for Orlando with 16 saves as he posted two, six, one and seven stops during the first, second, third and fourth quarters, respectively.
Ben Gerhard powered Buxmont with five goals. Kristian Stanczewski (three), Chris Scoboria (two), Ethan Hinz (one), Jorden McVeagh (one) and Robbie Thompson (one) also found the back of the cage, while goalie Caine Dusza made eight saves.
Cumberland Valley Completes 3-1 Run in Boys’ 18U Bracket B with 20-3 Victory Over Orlando Thunder White at 2019 National State Challenge
LANSDALE, Pa. – Paul Gensbigler and Naaem Sbaiti both scored four times to lead Cumberland Valley (Pa.) to a 20-3 defeat of Orlando Thunder White (Fla.) in Boys’ 18U action at the 2019 American Water Polo (AWP) National State Challenge.
Cumberland Valley – which finishes second in Bracket “B” with a 3-1 mark – will next be in action at 11:00 a.m. on Sunday, July 14, at North Penn High School against the runner-up from Bracket A in the tournament’s Third Place game. Orlando Thunder White places fourth in Bracket B and will return to the North Penn pool at 9:00 a.m. on July 14 to take on the Fourth Place team from Bracket A for Seventh Place.
CV never trailed in the game as the team opened up a 7-1 in the first quarter and jumped out to an 11-2 margin by halftime. Leading 16-2 after three quarters of action, Cumberland Valley closed out the victory with a 4-1 outburst in the fourth quarter for the 20-3 final score.
Jake Klingenberg (three), AJ Alderman (three), Shravan Pratheesh (two), Dan Ehresman (two), Chris Furlong (one) and John Coomes (one) also scored for Cumberland Valley in the win.
Jacoby Nagy (two) and Jet Zhang (one) accounted for Orlando Thunder White’s offense.

Maverick – which previously handled Orlando Thunder White (Fla.) (22-5 W), Team Chicago (Ill.) (17-12 W) and Cumberland Valley (19-13 W) – will next be in action at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 14, at North Penn against the victor of Bracket A with the tournament title and a check for $1,000 on the line.
Swim RVA – which finishes in Fifth Place in Bracket B with an 0-4 mark – will next be in action at 9:00 a.m. on July 14 at Wissahickon High School in Ambler, Pa, in the tournament’s Ninth Place game versus the Fifth Place finisher in Bracket A.
Maverick dominated the contest as the team opened up a 5-0 lead by the conclusion of the first quarter and acquired a 10-0 margin before Swim RVA broke up the shutout.
Leading 13-2 at halftime, Maverick further padded its margin with 4-2 and 3-0 scoring advantages in the third and fourth quarters, respectively, to take the 17-goal win.
Matej Sekulic led the way for the victors with four goals.
Matthew Gibellato accounted for the majority of Swim RVA’s scoring with a pair of markers. Goalie Danilo Lemaic stopped five shots in taking the loss.
Tiger Water Polo Snags First 18U Boys’ Bracket A Win at 2019 National State Challenge by Eclipsing La Salle, 10-6
LANSDALE, Pa. – David Lomakin put away five shots to power Tiger Water Polo (Pa.) to a 10-6 victory over La Salle (Pa.) in Boys’ 18U action on the third day of the 2019 American Water Polo (AWP) National State Challenge.
The victory marks the first of the tournament for Tiger Water Polo in Boys’ 18U play as the team improves to 1-2 in Bracket A. La Salle wraps-up its round-robin schedule in Bracket A with a 1-3 mark as the team will wait for the rest of the grouping to finish and determine if it makes either the Fifth, Seventh or Ninth Place game on Sunday, July 14.
Down 2-1 with 3:17 remaining in the first quarter, Tiger Water Polo took command of the contest by outscoring La Salle 3-1 over the remainder of the frame to grab a 4-3 lead. After La Salle tied the game at four-all with 4:36 left in the second quarter, Tiger Water Polo pushed back out in front at 5-4 prior to the intermission as Sean McClellan notched a tally at the 2:40 mark.
The margin grew to 9-5 by the end of the third quarter as Tiger Water Polo outscored La Salle by a 4-1 count. Leading by four goals, Tiger Water Polo was able to hang on as the teams exchanged markers in the waning moments of the contest for the 10-6 finale.
Keller Sens (two), Ben Phillips (one), Blake Camerlin (one) and McClellan completed Tiger Water Polo’s scorers, while goalie Jacob Hollo turned aside nine shots.
Drew Dachowski led the way for La Salle with a pair of goals. Goalie Matthew Sherry took the loss with 10 saves.
Buxmont Grounds Cardinal, 23-3, in 18U Boys’ Bracket A Action at 2019 National State Challenge
AMBLER, Pa. – Buxmont (Pa.) received scoring from eight different players in topping Cardinal (Pa.), 23-3, in Boys’ 18U competition at the 2019 American Water Polo (AWP) National State Challenge.
Competing at Wissahickon High School, Buxmont built a 6-1 lead by the end of the first quarter and never looked back in outscoring Cardinal 7-2, 9-0 and 1-0 in the second, third and fourth quarters, respectively, to improve to 3-0 in Bracket A at the tournament.
For Buxmont, Jorden McVeagh led the way with four goals, while Ethan Hinz and Kristian Stancewski joined him in posting hat-tricks. Goalie Caine Dusza made four saves in claiming the victory, while Cardinal’s Jacob Robinson turned aside five shots in taking the loss.
Maverick Locks Up No. 1 Spot in 18U Boys’ Bracket B with 19-13 Shootout Win Versus Cumberland Valley at 2019 National State Challenge
LANSDALE, Pa. — Matej Sekulic scored seven times and Walker Butler tacked on six markers as Maverick (Pa.) claimed a 19-13 victory over Cumberland Valley (Pa.) to lock-up the No. 1 spot in Boys 18U Bracket B competition at the 2019 American Water Polo (AWP) National State Challenge.
Maverick – which improves to 3-0 in Bracket B following earlier wins over Orlando Thunder White (Fla.) (22-5 W) and Team Chicago (Ill.) (17-12 W) – still has a game against Swim RVA (Va.) on the docket later today. However, a loss to Swim RVA combined with a win by Cumberland Valley in its final game versus Orlando Thunder White would tie Maverick and CV at 3-1. Maverick’s head-to-head win over Cumberland Valley then serves as the tiebreaker – guaranteeing no matter what occurs Maverick advances to the 18U Boys title game at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 14, back at North Penn High School against the top team from Bracket A.
Cumberland Valley – which will play the runner-up from Bracket A at 11:00 a.m. on July 14 also at North Penn for Third Place – couldn’t stop Maverick’s offense onslaught in the first quarter as CV fell behind by a 6-3 prior to the conclusion of the opening frame. Maverick continued to pour on the scoring over the remainder of the contest as the squad held 9-5 and 14-9 leads at the conclusion of the second and third quarters before outscoring Cumberland Valley 5-4 down the stretch for the 19-13 win.
Nathan Bloom earned the win for Maverick with five saves.
Team Chicago Clinches Third Place in Bracket B by Dispatching Swim RVA, 15-3, in 18U Boys’ Action at 2019 National State Challenge
LANSDALE, Pa. — Team Chicago (Ill.) wrapped up 18U Boys’ competition Bracket B play with a 2-2 mark as the team downed Swim RVA (Va.) by a 15-3 count at North Penn High School to start the third day of the 2019 American Water Polo (AWP) National State Challenge.
Team Chicago – which previously fell to Maverick (Pa.) by a 17-12 score and tripped Orlando Thunder White (Fla.) by a 23-7 count on Friday, July 11, dropped a 19-12 game to Cumberland Valley (Pa.) by a 19-12 score on Saturday, July 12 – to stand at 2-2. Orlando Thunder currently stands at 1-2 with an upcoming game against Cumberland Valley, but Team Chicago’s head-to-head victory over Orlando Thunder serves as the tiebreaker to put the Illinois natives into the Fifth Place game on Sunday, July 14, at North Penn against the third place finisher in Bracket A.
Team Chicago put the game against Swim RVA out of reach early by rattling off 10 goals in the opening quarter of play to claim a 10-1 lead. Ahead 11-1 by halftime, Team Chicago coasted to the win by outscoring Swim RVA 2-0 and 2-1 in the third and fourth quarters, respectively.
For Team Chicago, Michael Reiter and Dan Adamson both scored four times in the win in support of a five save effort by goalie Matt Wagonblatt.
Swim RVA – which now stands at 0-3 in Bracket B play – finishes fifth in Bracket B due to a 9-6 loss to Orlando Thunder White which will serve as the tiebreaker if both teams finish 1-3 in round-robin play. Subsequently, Swim RVA will play in the Ninth Place game on Sunday, July 14, at 9:00 a.m. against the fifth place finisher in Bracket A at Wissahickon High School. Orlando Thunder places fourth in Bracket B and will contest the Seventh Place game at North Penn on July 14 versus the fourth place finisher in Bracket A at 9:00 a.m.
Ethan Miller led the way for Swim RVA against Team Chicago with a pair of goals. Brett Sill chipped in a solo marker and goalie Danilo Lemaic stopped seven shots.
Wissahickon Proves to be the Host with the Most in Knocking Off North Penn, 19-8, in Final Girls’ 18U Bracket B Game at 2019 National State Challenge
LANSDALE, Pa. — North Penn (Pa.) could not defend its home water at North Penn High School as Wissahickon (Pa.) claimed a 19-8 victory to lock-up the runner-up spot in Bracket B and conclude Girls’ 18U round-robin play on the third day of the 2019 American Water Polo (AWP) National State Challenge.
North Penn – which finishes 2-2 in Bracket B to place third – will take on Wilson (Pa.) at Noon back at North Penn H.S. for Fifth Place, while Wissahickon – which wrapped up Bracket B with a 3-1 mark – squares off with Tiger Water Polo (Pa.) at Noon on campus in Ambler, Pa., for Third Place.
Wissahickon put North Penn behind the eight-ball early as the team ran out to a 3-0 lead on the way to a 5-1 scoreboard advantage by the conclusion of the first quarter. Leading 11-4 by halftime, Wissahickon iced the win with a 5-0 scoring outburst in the third quarter prior to North Penn shrinking its final deficit down by one via a 4-3 scoring streak in the closing moments of the game.
In cage, Caroline Dunigan took the loss with eight saves. Paige Benning earned the win with 10 saves in three quarters of work prior to Caitlin Valentine coming on to stop three shots in the fourth quarter.
Windy City Collars Wilson, 13-11, to Complete 4-0 Run in Girls’ 18U Bracket A at 2019 National State Challenge
LANSDALE, Pa. — Xonhane Medina and Alyssa Sayatovic both netted hat-tricks with three goals as Windy City (Ill.) leashed Wilson (Pa.) by a 13-11 count to complete a perfect 4-0 mark in Girls’ 18U Bracket A competition during the 2019 American Water Polo (AWPC) National State Challenge.
Via the victory, Windy City earns a shot at the Girls’ 18U tile and a check for $1,000, as the Illinois natives will battle Bracket B champion Cumberland Valley (Pa.) at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 14, back at North Penn High School for the National State Challenge crown.
Down 7-6 with 4:25 left in the third quarter, Windy City blew away Wilson down the stretch as the team outscored their Keystone State competition by a 4-1 count over the remainder of the frame to carry a 10-8 lead into the fourth quarter of action.
The margin swayed from three goals (11-8, 5:54) down to a single tally (11-10, 5:13) prior to Windy City ticking off back-to-back goals at 4:49 and 2:50 to widen the margin to three (13-10) and hold off Wilson in the closing moments of the contest.
For Windy City – which will have a chance to repeat as National State Challenge Champion after taking the 2018 title at home in Chicago – Kassy Rodriguez, Tatum Burek and Tegwyn Hollenbach all scored twice. Trinity Sheean completed her team’s tallies with a solo strike, while Peyton Nufer earned the win in cage with six saves.
Wilson – which finished third in Bracket A with a 2-2 mark – will conclude its participation at the National State Challenge on July 14 by squaring off with Bracket B Third Place finisher North Penn at Noon on Wissahickon High School’s campus in Ambler, Pa., for Fifth Place.

Cumberland Valley will next be in action at 2:00 p.m. back at North Penn High School against the victor of Bracket A in the tournament title game. Orlando Thunder finishes fourth in Bracket B and will take on Bracket A Fourth Place finisher Cardinal (Pa.) at 11:00 a.m. in the Seventh Place game on the grounds of Wissahickon High School in Ambler, Pa.
CV pulled away early from Orlando Thunder in the game as the team raced out to an 8-0 margin by the close of the first quarter and carried a 12-0 lead into halftime. Orlando Thunder was unable to overcome the deficit as Cumberland Valley added 4-1 and 3-2 scoring advantages in the third and fourth quarters, respectively, for the 19-3 final score.
For Cumberland Valley, Camille Kent, Alivia Smith and Mia Mattingly also found the back of the cage for single goals. Goalies Mikaela Wolf (six saves) and Ava Smith (three saves) split time in cage.
Cardinal Clinches Fourth Place in Bracket A by Stopping Rebel Polo, 10-6, in Girls’ 18U Play at 2019 National State Challenge
AMBLER, Pa. — Cardinal (Pa.) clinched Fourth Place in Bracket A by defeating Rebel Polo (Pa.), 10-6, in Girls’ 18U action on the third day of the 2019 American Water Polo (AWP) National State Challenge.
Battling at Wissahickon High School, Cardinal improved to 1-3 in Bracket A and dropped Rebel Polo to 0-4. The win helps place Cardinal into the tournament’s Seventh Place game at 11:00 a.m. back at Wissahickon against Orlando Thunder (Fla.) – the Fourth Place finisher from Bracket B. Rebel Polo will take on Pennridge (Pa.) – the Fifth Place finisher from Bracket B – at 10:00 a.m. at Wissahickon in the Ninth Place contest.
Rebel held the early lead in the game as the team jumped out to a 3-0 lead by the close of the first quarter. However, Cardinal rallied back in the second quarter by outscoring Rebel 5-0 to pull ahead 5-3 by halftime.
Rebel Polo was able to pull even at five-all with 3:06 left in the third quarter and again at six-all at the 2:16 mark, but Cardinal pushed ahead to stay by outscoring Rebel 4-0 – including a 3-0 advantage in the fourth quarter – to acquire the 10-6 victory.
Jasmine Thek earned Player of the Game honors as she made 11 saves – including five in the decisive fourth quarter – to permit Cardinal to surge for the win in the concluding moments of the contest.
Pennridge Finishes Fifth in Girls’ 18U Bracket B by Dropping 9-5 Game to North Penn at 2019 National State Challenge
LANSDALE, Pa. — Caroline Dunigan made 10 saves and the duo of Stella Burns and Elizabeth Koeper both scored twice as North Penn (Pa.) picked-up a 9-5 defeat of Pennridge (Pa.) in Girls’ 18U action at the 2019 American Water Polo (AWP) National State Challenge.
Due to the loss, Pennridge finishes 0-4 in Bracket B as the squad places fifth in the grouping and will next be in action at 10:00 a.m. on Sunday, July 14, against the Fifth Place finisher from Bracket A – Rebel Polo (Pa.) – in the tournament’s Ninth Place game.
North Penn improves to 2-1 and remains alive for the runner-up spot in Bracket B and a berth in the Third Place game as the squad will next be in action at 8:00 p.m. this evening versus Wissahickon (Pa.). Wissahickon also enters the game at 2-1.
Competing at home in the North Penn High School pool, the host institution gained a 2-0 lead with 3:45 left in the first quarter and pushed its margin to 4-1 by the concluding horn of the frame. The margin expanded to 8-1 by halftime before North Penn saw Pennridge pull within four goals at 8-4 heading into the fourth quarter of action.
The teams traded goals in the final moments of the game as North Penn held on for a 9-5 win.
Jane Montague, Casey Brennan, Abigail Brodhead, Paige Mitchell and Emily Hinz joined Burns and Koeper in accounting for North Penn’s scoring.
Megan Weiss punched in three tallies for Pennridge with Sam Darrell and Emily Meyers tacking on solo markers. Hannah Keyser made nine saves in cage.

AMBLER, Pa. — Sarah Koehler scored seven times for all Tiger Water Polo (Pa.) needed to upend Wilson (Pa.), 15-6, to shake-up Bracket A in Girls’ 18U competition at the 2019 American Water Polo (AWP) National State Challenge.
Due to the win/loss, Tiger Water Polo improves to 3-1 in Bracket A with its lone loss coming to Windy City (Ill.). Windy City stands at 3-0 with a date against a now 2-1 Wilson on tap at 7:00 p.m. this evening. A Wilson defeat of Windy City will set Tiger Water Polo, Windy City and Wilson all at 3-1 as the No. 1-to-3 positions in Bracket A and subsequent qualifiers for the First-to-Fifth Place games on Sunday, July 14, will be determined by tiebreakers.
Trailing 1-0 and 2-1 in the game’s early going, Tiger Water Polo gained a 3-2 lead by the end of the first quarter and pulled away before halftime with a 7-0 scoring outburst in the second half to gain a 10-2 lead by the break. The margin proved more than enough to hold off Wilson as the teams traded pairs of goals in the third quarter prior to Tiger Water Polo gaining some additional breathing room with a 2-1 scoring advantage in the fourth quarter.
Windy City Repels Rebel Polo, 12-2, for Girls’ 18U Win at 2019 National State Challenge
AMBLER, Pa. — Xonhane Medina scored six times as Windy City (Ill.) squelched Rebel Polo (Pa.), 12-2, in Girls’ 18U Bracket A action on the third day of the 2019 American Water Polo (AWP) National State Challenge.
Playing at Wissahickon High School, Windy City fell behind 1-0 at 6:13 of the first quarter and went ahead at 2-1 at the 4:37 mark before Rebel Polo squared the teams at two-all with 4:09 on the clock. However, the game belonged to Windy City from there as the Illinois program outscored Rebel Polo 3-0 over the remainder of the first quarter prior to running off 3-0, 2-0 and 2-0 scoring advantages in the second, third and fourth quarters, respectively.
Kassy Rodriguez and Alyssa Sayatovic both added pairs of goals for Windy City to accompany single scores by Trinity Sheean and Tatum Burek. Peyton Nufer picked up the win between the pipes with five saves.
Julianna Kelcy and Sarah Bishop both scored for Rebel Polo as the team fell to 0-3 in Bracket A competition.
Wissahickon Defends Home Water in Swamping Orlando Thunder, 17-9, in 18U Girls’ Bracket B Victory at 2019 National State Challenge
AMBLER, Pa. — Wissahickon (Pa.) received scoring from nine athletes and five saves by goalie Caitlin Valentine to overcome Orlando Thunder (Fla.), 17-9, in Bracket B Girls’ 18U competition at the 2019 American Water Polo (AWP) National State Challenge.
Competing in the program’s home domain of Wissahickon High School, the squad reeled off 3-1 and 4-2 scoring advantages in the opening pair of quarters to carry a 7-3 lead into halftime.
Orlando Thunder was unable to overcome the deficit for the remainder of the contest as Wissahickon rolled to a 12-goal win.
For Wissahickon – which improves to 2-1 in Bracket B competition – Maggie Krieger led the way with four goals. Jillian Garvey and Chloe Lovensheimer chipped in hat-tricks.
Sofia Dahlmann powered the Orlando Thunder attack with five goals. Amanda Clinco tacked on three more with Hayleigh Speer depositing a single marker.
Cumberland Valley Handles Pennridge, 15-2, to Clinch Bracket B No. 1 Spot in 18U Girls’ Win at 2019 National State Challenge
LANSDALE, Pa. — Cumberland Valley (Pa.) locked up the Bracket B championship as the team dispatched Pennridge (Pa.) via a 15-2 final score in Girls’ 18U action on the third day of the 2019 American Water Polo (AWP) National State Challenge.
Cumberland Valley – which improves to 3-0 in Bracket B with earlier victories over Wissahickon (Pa.) (19-10 W) and North Penn (Pa.) (9-7 W) – still has one game remaining against Orlando Thunder. However, CV has head-to-head wins over both North Penn and Wissahickon – the only two teams in the bracket able to tie Cumberland Valley – guaranteeing a bracket victory.

Tiger Water Polo Paws Past Cardinal, 9-4, in 18U Girls’ Bracket A Win at 2019 National State Challenge
AMBLER, Pa. — Jasmine Thek stopped 15 shots for Cardinal (Pa.), but Tiger Water Polo (Pa.) used 3-2, 2-1, 2-0 and 2-1 scoring advantages in the first, second, third and fourth quarters, to pick up a 9-4 18U Girls’ win on the third day of the 2019 American Water Polo (AWP) National State Challenge.
Tiger Water Polo – which improves to 2-1 in Bracket A – fell behind 1-0 but rallied back to pull ahead by a 3-2 score by the conclusion of the first quarter. Following a 2-1 scoring advantage in the second quarter to acquire a 5-3 by halftime, Tiger Water Polo continued to build its lead as the team outscored Cardinal 2-0 and 2-1 in the third and fourth quarters, respectively.
For Tiger Water Polo, Emma Halle led the way with five goals in support of a nine save performance by Marissa Dorman.
